Desis Rising Up and Moving - DRUM
Services Provided: DRUM - Desis Rising Up and Moving is a community based social justice organization of low-income South Asian immigrants and immigrants facing deportation in New York City. Desi is a common term used by people of South Asian descent to identify as people from Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Nepal, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, and parts of the diaspora including Africa, England, Fiji, Guyana, and Trinidad. Our vision is to organize low-income South Asian immigrant for racial, economic, and social justice on critical local struggles and their global roots. DRUM is committed to centralizing poor and working class immigrants as the agents of social change and follows the leadership of low-income South Asian immigrants. DRUM builds the leadership of low-income, undocumented and detained immigrants, particularly women and youth, through popular education, grassroots organizing campaigns, and direct advocacy.
DRUM’s Immigrant Justice Program builds the leadership of low-income South Asian immigrants, YouthPower! builds the leadership of low-income South Asian youth, and Third World Resistance project builds strategic alliances for low-income South Asian migrants.
