Cooley's Anemia Foundation
Services Provided: The Cooley's Anemia Foundation (CAF) is dedicated to serving people afflicted with various forms of thalassemia, most notably the major form of this genetic blood disease, Cooley's anemia or thalassemia major. Children born with the severe form of the disease require lifelong blood transfusions as often as every two weeks and must undergo a treatment that often requires inserting a needle into the stomach or leg and pumping a drug into the body for 8-12 hours every day. Even with this extensive treatment, patients experience an early death due to organ failure.
A person may carry the trait for thalassemia without being aware of it, as the trait causes no side effects other than an occasional mild anemia. It is important to be tested for the trait for if two people who each carry the trait have children together, there is a 1-in-4 chance with each pregnancy that the child will be born with a severe form of the disease.
CAF works to educate those in the Asian community about thalassemia and thalassemia trait, especially those who are thinking about having a child. CAF also has an extensive patient services program that provides physician referrals, helps patients with insurance issues, keeps patients up-to-date on recent developments and advocates with the public and elected officials on behalf of the thalassemia community.
