Children Counselor
BACKGROUND
The Korean American Family Service Center (KAFSC) seeks a full-time Children Counselor who works closely with Hodori (Little Tiger) After-school Program Coordinator, group teachers, and other counseling staff to develop and manage individual plans for children (age group 6-12 years old), support to their parents and maximize our comprehensive services to meet their needs. The Counselor reports directly to Program Coordinator. This position will also receive clinical supervision from Program Director.
KAFSC is a leading not-for-profit organization assisting women, children, and families in the New York tri-state area to recognize and eliminate relationship violence and abuse. Our counseling, education, advocacy and support services help individuals empower themselves to build safe and healthy relationships based on mutual respect and dignity. We have 11 full-time and 12 part-time employees. Each year, we serve over 1,500 individuals and all our services are culturally sensitive, linguistically appropriate, and free.
Key Responsibilites
Counseling & Advocacy
- Conduct initial interviews of Hodori program applicants and determine eligibilities
- Identify strengths and needs of children, adolescents, and parents and establish individualized plan for each client
- Work closely with the Coordinator, 4 teachers and 4 TAs daily to address any issues and maintain a safe orderly learning environment for Hodori
- Provide individual and group counseling for children (ages 6-12) at the Hodori After-school Program and children referred by our domestic violence counselors
- Provide on-going case management to families enrolled in the Hodori After-school Program
- Maintain a caseload of 65-100 children, including maintaining appropriate documentation.
- Communicate with parents on a regular basis to update children's progress and provide parenting education
- Process transfers and terminations of cases
- Ensure professional relationships with clients to create an atmosphere of empathy, safety, & support
- Foster and maintain constructive working relationships with school staff, guidance counselors, education partners, and other social service agencies
- Respond to our 24-hr Hotline when no other DV counselors are available
- Serves as a backup counselor for the 24-hr Hotline one week every other month
Community Outreach & Education
- Participate in agency-wide community outreach activities
- Engage in public speaking and media activities including writing articles for newspapers, magazines, newsletters, websites, etc. as requested
- Provide supervision to interns and volunteers as appropriate
Administration
- Ensure that all client records and documentation are complete, accurate and up-to-date
- Prepare documents, reports, and statistics for all appropriate, program-related activities
- Provide administrative and technical support to the Hodori Program Coordinator
- Actively participate in bi-weekly staff team meetings and Hodori collaborative meetings
- Carry out other duties as may be required
Must be able to successfully select, plan and implement developmentally appropriate after-school program learning activities. Must be able to maintain a safe orderly learning environment that involves the assigned group of children/youth. Accurately complete forms, records, time sheets and reports. Supervise students' completion of homework and other assignments. Qualify for CPR and first aid certification. Perform all other duties as assigned by the ASEP Site Coordinator.
Qualification
- Master's Degree in Counseling, Art Therapy, Play Therapy, Social Work, Psychology, or related fields.
- In-depth knowledge or/and experience working with children and families
- Oral and written fluency in English and Korean
- Collaborative attitude, positive attitude and sense of empathy towards clients
- Computer competency in Microsoft Office Suite and internet research
- Familiarity with Korean/Asian and immigrant community a plus
